I was in Silverton on Tues. and wanted to climb Redcloud and Sunshine but had a 2WD car and didn't want to drive 150 miles to Lake City so I camped at Animas Forks and next morning (at 9:37 AM) hiked 10 mi. over Cinnamon Pass to the Silver Lake TH. Unfortunately monsoons returned Wed. after weeks of dry weather, and I was stormed off at about 1 PM about a mile from Redcloud. I ran back down and thumbed a ride back after 2 mi. on road, getting an 18 mi. training hike/run.
I tried again the next day, this time driving to Lake City. Started up the trail at 9 AM Thurs., summitted Redcloud at 11, then 45 min. each way to Sunshine and back, and done at 2 PM under partly cloudy skies.
Driving back I hit a rock and punctured the transmission oil pan in my rental car and had it towed to Lake City where it will be until Tues. They rent jeeps so now I am going to try some 14ers that require 4WD access. I plan to climb the Wilsons (or some of them) from Silver Pick TH on Sun. and Snowmass (S ridge) from the upper 4WD parking at Lead King basin on Mon. If anyone wants to climb with me, meet me at the TH. I will camp the night before. I will have a dark blue jeep (Lake City rental) hard top and a small blue tent. My photo is at
http://www.mattmahoney.net/ I won't have computer access between now and the climbs so just meet me if you want to climb. I will try to start around sunrise each day. |
