2010/01/16-17 - Just Another Mt. Elbert trip. 14,433'
CMC trip with 15 total participants.
I just sat down to write this, a week late, and
took a quick glance at some other recent TRs:
- Steve Gladbach's Capital Peak in Winter TR for the same weekend!
Awesome!
- And Ken Nolan did Ellingwood Point (14,042’) & Blanca Peak (14,345’)
as a day hike on Sat, 1/16 then
Elbert as a day hike on Sunday 1/17?!?!?!?!
I personally saw and talked to him on Sunday on Elbert at ~13,000
as he was on the way up and I was on the way down.
Just 2 of the other great TRs out there!
Who's going to read another Mt. Elbert walkup TR
when they can read about real mountaineering!
Don't miss these TRs!!!!
Congrats Everyone!!!!!
Anyway just for the record and
since I haven't had any posting here in quite a while,
here is a boring TR for a relatively boring trip,
compared to some of the others TRs out there!
Another January, another attempt on Mt. Elbert.
Fortunately this one was successful again with
13 of 15 people making the summit.
This was my 21st January attempt on Mt. E in the last 23 years.
It went like clockwork again.
Met in Golden at CMC Sat AM.
Breakfast in Leadville at Doc Holiday's.
Out to the TH and packed in to camp at ~11,800 before 4PM.
Up ~6AM Sun, gone before 7:30AM.
The last of us summitted before 10:30AM,
back to camp before noon,
packed up and back to the cars by ~2:20PM.
Dinner in Buena Vista on the way home.
I was home in Littleton by ~7:10PM
Making this one of the fastest, smoothest trips ever
due to good weather, strong group and
a well packed trail all the way up!
As Matt Pierce noted in his Elbert TR, the same weekend,
the route was packed all the way to and above timberline.
Making snowshoes unnecessary on the trail.
However, stepping a couple of inches off the packed trail in many places
will leave you knee deep, or deeper, in soft snow.
We used snowshoes for packing tent sites, etc.
Some chose to use their snowshoes on different parts of the trail.
Elbert also saw many day hikers and skiers on both Sat and Sunday,
in addition to us doing it as an overnight.
A busy weekend on the state's high point for sure! |
