12/14/02 (saturday) I made a solo summit of Mt Sherman. Starting ~4 a.m. from below the 10,000'?Fourmile Campground (8 miles west on Park County 18) due to road conditions. The roadgate beneath the first mining area is closed. I made a steep line up the northeast facing slope to the summit ridge(instead of the Sheridan/Sherman saddle)for practice with some new gear (ice axe, crampons) It was SUPER cold and windy -especially on the summit ridge, ~12 noon I'm on the summit. If there is a summit register I couldnt find it. I didnt see anyone ALL DAY, it was a scary kind of peaceful! Descent behind the ridge to the 13,140' saddle, then spent some time exploring around 12,800' Hilltop Mine. Other than windblown snow, visibility was perfect. I took 50 or more digital pictures..including misc. mining equipment. I believe Mt Sherman is an amazing mountain. Hope you enjoyed the report.
