Spotlight on Dave Gibson!

Congratulations to our latest Grand Slam finisher Dave Gibson! We had the opportunity of asking Dave a few quick questions:

Q: What was your first fourteener, and when did you climb it?
A:
Although I first climbed Pikes Peak in May 1991, I didn't get my first official 14er "bag" until I did the 25.8 mile round trip on Barr Trail in July 1991.

Q: At what point did you commit to finishing them all?
A: I don't recall the exact moment I made that commitment, but suspect it was shortly after doing Grays and Torreys, my second and third 14ers, in 1992.

Q: What is your favorite fourteener route?
A: That's a tough one since there are so many great routes. I'd say the standard Class 3 route on the Crestone Needle had the highest climbing fun factor for me.

Q: What is your least favorite route on a 14er?
A:
Hmmm. Mount Evans from Summit Lake was pretty lame. I had much more fun doing Evans from Guanella Pass and fighting the willows and the swamp!

Q: What was your most delightful moment on a 14er?
A:
That's also a tough one. I remember feeling pretty awesome after reaching the summit of North Maroon after the exciting traverse from South Maroon.

Q: What was your most terrifying moment on a 14er?
A:
That probably was near the summit of Uncompahgre on my only failed attempt to summit. We got an uncharacteristically late start (8 AM) and got caught in a very early thunderstorm. My climbing partner and I made it to within 5 minutes of the summit when we saw a lady running down past us with her long hair all standing up above her head due to the static. Good sense prevailed and we turned around and ran all the way back to the Nellie Creek trailhead.

Q: Do you have any future mountaineering plans?
A:
I'm hooked. Working on Colorado's top 100 definitely is next. I also plan to volunteer with the Colorado Fourteener Initiative to help repair some of the trails I put to good use.

Q: What 14ers would you NOT want to climb again (if any)?
A:
None. The ones that were less than exciting in the summer should be plenty of fun in the winter!

Q; Was there any point that you considered giving up the goal of finishing?
A:
No.

Q: Would you recommend climbing the 14ers as goal for everybody?
A: I recommend it to everybody in reasonably good physical condition.

Q: What is the single most important piece of advice that you would give to someone just starting out?
A:
Start hiking early in the morning! That may seem pretty obvious, but I'm repeatedly surprised by how late people start out on 14ers.
